The Institute for Democracy Studies is a nonprofit, tax-exempt research and educational center devoted to the study of anti-democratic religious and political movements and organizations in the U.S. and internationally.

Founded in 1999 in New York City, IDS has a unique and extensive archive of primary source material. The Institute currently maintains research programs in three areas: law, religion, and reproductive rights.

The Law and Democracy Program of IDS conducts research on legal organizations that are challenging mainstream American democratic jurisprudence and constitutional rights in such areas as separation of church and state, reproductive rights, and racial and gender justice.

The Religion and Democracy Program of IDS explores the landscape of religious institutions and theology, now threatened by a resurgence of extremism. Fundamentalist organizations are challenging constitutionally protected reproductive rights and separation of church and state, among other democratic concerns.

The Reproductive Rights and Democracy Program of IDS is engaged in domestic and international research on the major structures opposed to reproductive rights from abortion to contraception and sexuality education. These initiatives often originate from and are generated by profound opposition to democratic institutions and even constitutional democracy itself.

IDS publications document the agendas, structures, and funding of these groups. Our purpose is to further inform nationwide public discussion on major trends affecting constitutional democracy and human and civil rights.

IDS issues briefing papers in each of our three program areas and publishes an investigative newsletter, IDS Insights.
